Patients with asthma using the weight loss and diabetes drug semaglutide may experience fewer attacks, a new study suggests. The connection to reduced asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) flare-ups was stronger among those receiving higher doses of semaglutide. Researchers also noted that individuals with 'more pronounced' asthma appeared to benefit the most.
Semaglutide acts as the key active ingredient in diabetes treatment Ozempic and weight management drug Wegovy. It is part of a group of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which help lower blood sugar levels and slow digestion, helping people stay fuller for longer. A study presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Barcelona examined UK medical records of tens of thousands of people who started GLP-1s.
The lead researcher, Professor Chloe Bloom, found that semaglutide use was associated with nearly a 40% reduction in asthma attacks and a 20% reduction in COPD flare-ups. She emphasized that while the findings are encouraging, people should not start GLP-1 receptor agonists specifically for lung conditions without current medical guidance. Dr Alexander Mathioudakis and Dr Samantha Walker commented on the study, highlighting its significance in supporting respiratory care and the need for future trials to include respiratory outcomes.
